We’ve looked at homes for sale from Manhattan, to the French countryside, to Shanghai to find out what Adelaide home buyers would get for their buck around the world, and the results are surprising!

Firstly we are off to the east coast of Australia arriving in the harbour city where housing prices have almost doubled since 2009, according to CoreLogic data, who also reported that in 2016 alone Sydney property prices jumped 15.5 per cent.

For $435,000 in the inner west Sydney suburb of Croydon Park, you can buy a 40 square-metre apartment. The apartment features one large bedroom, an open plan living/dining area, modern kitchen, bathroom and balcony – but you will have to share your laundry facilities. Croydon Park is located 12 km from Sydney’s CBD.

New York

In the ‘Big Apple’ $440,000 AUD converts to $337,000 USD. With this price tag you will find yourself a studio residence on the 12th floor of the Tudor City Place apartment complex, located on the East Side of Manhattan. Although there isn’t a bedroom as such, the apartment features views of the Chrysler Building, a full sized bathroom and a kitchenette with a two-burner cooktop, dishwasher and full sized refrigerator.

The building has a roof deck providing sweeping views of the Midtown skyline, and is a short walk from fine dining restaurants along First and Second avenues.

In the United Kingdom, $440,000 AUD is equal to £271,000, which will buy you a two-bedroom flat in southwest suburb Mitcham. Mitcham is located 11.6 kilometres from the centre of London.

The flat, which has an internal space of just under 63 square-metres, features a private entrance, well-proportioned rooms and off-street parking to the rear.

Next we are heading to the German capital, where just over $410,000 AUD will land you a brand new two-bedroom apartment in Berlin-Mittem – the first and most central borough of Berlin.

Close to public transport, the apartment features a modern kitchenette, while the building has a concierge service, fitness studio and bistro.

If you fancy escaping to the countryside, a five-bedroom, one-bathroom home is for sale for $440,000 AUD in Breval – located 68 kilometres from Paris. The property, featuring 153 square-metres of living space, also boasts a garage, heated pool, electric heating and fenced garden with trees.

Heading to Italy now, where for $435,000 AUD a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment in Tuscany could be yours. There is an open living room and well-equipped kitchen, but the property’s main feature is the sea view.

In Shanghai, which is the fifth most popular destination in the world for real estate investors, $440,000 AUD will get you a two-bedroom, one bathroom apartment.

The apartment, located on the top floor of the 15-floor building, is 82 square-metres and was built in 2005.

Finishing in Adelaide, for $419,000 you can get yourself a three-bedroom, two-bathroom townhouse built in 2012. This home for sale is located in Lightsview, which is just under 10 kilometres to Adelaide’s CBD, and features an open plan kitchen, dining and family area, master bedroom with ensuite bathroom and built in robe, and a double garage.

Using HomeStart Finance home loan to buy the Lightsview home, your upfront costs (3% deposit and lender and government fees and charges) would be $46,757.
