Being water-wise is the role of any responsible homeowner but it can also save you big dollars on your next water bill.

Here are some tips to keep in mind this summer and some fast facts to get you thinking about your water use from waterforgood.sa.gov.au:

  • Reducing your shower from seven to four minutes will save up to 60 litres every time.
  • Installing a low-flow showerhead can save up to 11 litres of water every minute.
  • Leaving the tap running in the bathroom while you’re washing your hands or cleaning your teeth can use 360 litres per week.
  • Use lawn-mowing clippings to reduce evaporation by as much as 70% so mulch your garden regularly.
  • A single leaking tap can waste thousands of litres of water per year. Regularly check outdoor taps, pipes and plumbing fixtures for leaks
  • Buy a water-efficient dishwasher. It uses around half the water of average models. Also, leaving the tap running when you are cleaning up in the kitchen can use about 300 litres per week.
  • Only machine wash laundry when you have a full load. This can save 10 litres of water every wash.
  • Install a dual flush toilet; this can save up to 50% of water every flush.
  • Install water efficient taps or tap aerators as these help to subtly reduce water flow.
