Defending your home against pests is the role of any responsible home owner. Termites can destroy the structure of your home and spiders, flies, cockroaches and other pests can also affect the health of your family.
Here are five tips from Murray Pest Control that could help.
1. Termites
Top of the summer pest list is termites (white ants) because of the damage they can do to a home in a very short time.
Warm weather sees termite activity increase as they forage underground for food. Any timber in touch with the ground (like pergola posts) is an open invitation to a colony. Make sure that outside taps don’t drip and air conditioning run-off water is drained properly as water on the ground will attract termites.
The CSIRO recommend a professional termite inspection every 12 months.
2. Spiders
Here’s a simple trick for more effective spider elimination – spray the webs! Spiders return to their webs regularly, so spraying them with an appropriate insecticide and leaving the webs intact for a couple of weeks will help eliminate many more spiders than you’d be able to by just spraying spiders you happen to see.
Also, make sure you spray into all cracks and crevices around the outside of your home.
3. Bees
Swarms will often invade walls, eaves, sheds and pergolas. Bees are looking for a place to settle and start a hive. Never approach bees and NEVER spray them with water. Moisture is one of the things they’re looking for, so spraying may encourage them to stay!

A swarm that arrives in the afternoon may well move on at sunset. Stay well clear and if they’re still there the next day, call a pest professional. If your pets have a water bowl outside, consider floating a couple of corks in it. It gives a bee looking for water a place to land, drink and move on. Better than being in the water and stinging your pet.
4. Ants
Ants in your home can be one of the worst pest experiences. Black ants nest outdoors, in ceilings and under paving. Foraging worker ants cause a nuisance indoors as they travel widely in search of food, following well defined trails and clustering around a food source such as in kitchen cupboards and pantries.
They look unpleasant but can also damage food, making it unfit for human consumption. The best tip for preventing an ant attack is cleanliness! Surfaces should be kept clean of spills and food remnants. Stored food should be kept in clean, tightly closed containers.
5. Flies and mozzies
It wouldn’t be an Aussie summer without flies and mozzies. Keeping them outside is one of the key things to limit problems indoors. Make sure fly screens are fitted and in good condition, fill cracks and crevices with silicone, fit door seals and block any access holes in the roof.

Keeping rubbish bins tightly sealed and away from the house will be a big help with flies and reducing water sources (even pet bowls) will help control mozzies, cockroaches and even rats and mice.
